Studio Philosophy
Kody believes in the power of music education. It is a lifelong pursuit that shows us the power of compounding effort and personal fulfilment. It teaches humanity, patience, problem-solving, and discipline, and makes us better communicators, collaborators, and community members.
As an artist, Kody understands the difficulties and obstacles involved with developing technique, and finding artistic identity. His philosophy as a teacher is built upon the understanding that each student has different goals, strengths, and weaknesses. He firmly believes that tailoring his approach to each student is the best way to help them find achievement and fulfillment within music.
While his approach with each student may vary, he always provides a caring and supportive environment, and encourages students and parents to cultivate one at home. It is through this kind of environment that students have the freedom to grow from their mistakes and the courage to express themselves.
On a pedagogical level, Kody believes that excellent technique means playing with effortlessness and freedom from tension. He spends a lot of time on fundamentals, ensuring that students build an efficient technique that works for their unique anthropometry. His approach to artistry is heavily student driven. He encourages students to pursue their musical interests, and build their interpretations based off of life experiences.
For beginning and intermediate students, Kody draws from the Suzuki Method. He believes it provides an excellent foundation off of which students can grow individually. Students are transitioned to standard exercises, etudes and repertoire when their technique and artistry are ready.
Teaching Experience & Credentials
Kody offers private violin and viola lessons in San Mateo. He has been teaching for a decade and holds positions at music schools in San Mateo. He earned a Master's degree from the Cincinnati College–Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
While at CCM, Kody served as teaching assistant to Professor Ayane Kozasa, giving weekly lessons to undergraduate, master's, and doctoral violin and viola students. Alongside his teaching, he maintains an active performing career and has collaborated with artists including Alexi Kenney, Nobuko Imai, Kristen Lee, and the Kronos Quartet.
